This painting is an examination of my recent decline in mental health due in part to the increased global anxiety and panic brought on by the Coronavirus. It seems fair to say, this year has been hard for many of us. The common adage, you don’t know what you have until it’s gone, seems applicable to the entirety of this year. 2020 will certainly be looked back upon as the year we learned how artificial and baseless our societal framing is and how deeply we have believed the illusion of a normal life. For me, this year will remind me of the death of my grandfather, and the year of increased anxiety. This painting is about contemplation, and it is about suffocation. It’s like a sunken ship which has been punctured and filled of exterior material it was designed to keep out. 2020, the year of the sunken ship.
Esta pintura es una investigación de mi reciente declive en la salud mental debido en parte al aumento de la ansiedad y el pánico global provocados por el Coronavirus. Parece justo decir que este año ha sido difícil para muchos de nosotros. El adagio común, no sabes lo que tienes hasta que se acaba, parece aplicable a la totalidad a este año. El 2020 ciertamente será considerado el año en el que aprendimos que artificial e infundado es nuestro marco social y como hemos creído en la ilusión de una vida normal. Para mí, este año me recordará la muerte de mi abuelo y el año de mayor ansiedad. Esta pintura trata sobre la contemplación y sobre la asfixia. Es como un barco hundido que ha sido perforado y lleno de material ajeno para el que fue diseñado. 2020, el año del barco hundido.
