Belt Wreath represents taking emotional and physical control of an artifact of abuse—using strength and color as catalysts to transform trauma into vibrancy. The belt begins as a mundane item, yet is repurposed into a tool for inflicting injury. Through the therapy of ripping the belts apart to create beauty, the artist arrives at catharsis. The year 2020 has been a period of public crisis and abuse of power. At the same time, quarantine has forced us to turn inward as individuals. The processing of societal loss inevitably opens pathways to past personal grief. Belt Wreath is the artist’s private answer to the public blow of this time. Fabiola Bedoya uses mixed media and color to create juxtapositions that are documented with photography. Her obsession with color came at a young age where her childhood trauma caused her to hold onto the colors of her Mexican background and childhood influences.
