From 1915-1960, almost 6 million African Americans migrated from the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, seeking job opportunities and hoping to escape oppressive conditions such as lynching, unjust legal systems and denial of the right to vote. That struggle for equality and right to vote continues today.
