This portrait is inspired by my work mentoring school-aged boys. The pandemic all but eliminated that opportunity yet the boys still need supportive adults willing to help them work through their transformation, to choose different hats, to wonder about fit and come to a life decision even in these uncertain times. The work references the “book of life”, the path to identity through darkness. My paintings are titled for age in months denoted as chapters. The covers are mostly from older texts, books I used to find at library sales or thrift stores. They represent resources once so common I sometimes got them for free and now so rare to access they appear precious, an essential never before thought to be one before the pandemic. The book covers are faded and worn from time and many hands—not unlike boys trying to find their own right hat/right path.
Este retrato está inspirado en mi trabajo como mentora de niños en edad escolar. La pandemia casi eliminó esa oportunidad, pero los chicos aún necesitan adultos que los apoyen y que los ayuden a trabajar en su transformación, a elegir entre diferentes opciones, a preguntarse sobre su estado físico y a tomar decisiones sobre la vida aún en estos tiempos inciertos. La obra hace referencia al “libro de la vida”, el camino hacia la identidad a través de la oscuridad. Mis pinturas se titulan por edad en meses denotados como capítulos. Las portadas son en su mayoría de textos antiguos, libros que solía encontrar en las ventas de la biblioteca o en las tiendas de segunda mano. Representan recursos que antes eran tan comunes, que a veces los conseguía gratis, y ahora tan raros de acceder que parecen preciosos, algo esencial, que nunca lo había sido antes de la pandemia. Las tapas de los libros están descoloridas y desgastadas por el tiempo y por muchas manos, no tan distinto de los chicos que tratan de encontrar sus propias opciones o su propio camino/opción.
